Iaijutsu / Iaido

Traditional Japanese Swordsmanship

Description

Iaijutsu is an intrinsic form of Japanese modern kobudo and encompasses hundreds of styles of swordsmanship, all of which employ evasion and counter attack techniques.

Iaijutsu is, for the most part, practiced solo via technical drills, or kata and invloves the execution of various swift, defensive strategies against single or multiples opponents. The training includes learning to draw an iaito (training sword) quickly and effectively from the scabbard and using the blade to shield and/or cut an opponent.

Students will experience basic sword handling through a variety of cutting techniques called suburi and will gain an understanding of the correct blade angles when cutting with one or two hands.
